Tichu is a popular trick-taking card game that originated in China and has gained popularity around the world. It is played with a standard deck of 52 cards and can accommodate four players, playing in two teams of two. The game is similar to other trick-taking games like Bridge and Spades, but with its own unique rules and gameplay.
Objective of the Game: The goal of Tichu is to be the first team to reach a total of 1000 points. Points are awarded based on the successful execution of special moves and winning tricks.
Card Values: In Tichu, the cards are ranked from lowest to highest; 2 being the lowest and Ace being the highest. The suits do not have any significance in this game.
Gameplay: To start the game, the dealer shuffles and deals out the entire deck of 52 cards, giving each player 13 cards. Players then take turns playing cards in a clockwise direction, with the player to the left of the dealer starting the game.
The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of multiple tricks. A trick is a round of gameplay where each player plays one card from their hand, and the player with the highest-ranking card wins the trick. The winning player leads the next trick with any card they choose. Each trick can contain anywhere from one to four cards, depending on the number of players.
Special Moves: Tichu includes a few special moves that add excitement and strategy to the game.
Tichu - This move can be declared when a player has a hand of at least 8 cards. It signifies that the player intends to win all the remaining tricks of the round. If successful, the team is awarded 100 points. However, if the player fails to win all the tricks, the team loses 100 points.
Grand Tichu - This is a bold move that can only be declared before the first trick is played. It signifies that a player intends to win all the tricks in the entire game. If successful, the team is awarded 200 points, but if the player fails, the team loses 200 points.
The Dog - This move involves exchanging one or two cards with your partner at the start of each round. The player holding the Dog can exchange it for any card in their partner’s hand, without revealing what the Dog is.
Winning Tricks: Apart from using the special moves, players aim to win as many tricks as possible. The team that wins the most tricks in a round is awarded 200 points. Each trick won by a team after that is also worth 25 points.
Scoring: At the end of each round, the points are tallied, and the game continues until one team reaches a total of 1000 points. The game can also end if a team reaches a negative 100 points.
Tichu is an entertaining and challenging card game that has gained popularity among players of all ages. Its unique gameplay and special moves make it stand out from other trick-taking games. So gather your friends and family, grab a deck of cards, and get ready to have hours of fun with Tichu.
